In 2004, the UPS policy for drivers was that the right way to get to any destination was to avoid left-hand turns.
UPS engineers found that left-hand turns were a waste of time, a waste of fuel, and lead to more accidents. It’s something they almost never do.
Tasha Hovland, an industrial engineering manager, said…
“A guesstimate, I would probably say 90 percent. I mean we really, really hate left turns at UPS.”
This no left hand turn policy has improved profits and safety.
You can apply this same philosophy to your workouts and not only be safer but see improved results.
Doing the right exercises, with the right technique, will help you stay injury free and save a ton of time.
Over the years, I’ve been in lots of gyms all over the US and Canada. Along my travels I’ve lots of bad exercise technique and even a few injuries.
All of them preventable.
In every single case, poor technique was to blame.
Many times, one simple adjustment is all it takes to stay out of harms way.
I’ve found the muscle building crowd the worst. In an effort to get bigger and stronger they push the maximum amount and tend to neglect form. Technique gets thrown out the window all in an effort to PR.
Another problem I see people doing a lot of ineffective exercises. Doing biceps curls on a BOSU is a great example of an ineffective exercise done throughout gyms all across the country.
While this isn’t going to get you hurt, it does waste your time. It certainly isn’t going to help build up the biceps.
Useless exercises are one thing. It’s just time wasted. What you have to be carful of are the dangerous exercises. Behind the neck shoulder presses are right up there. These can do a doozy on your shoulders and nock you out of the gym for a long time.
The same thing happens on the weight loss side of the equation. To get rid of those trouble spots and get that perfect body, you don’t need to do biceps and triceps exercises. Your time is limited in the gym. Why waste time doing something that’s not going to help you get where you want to go.
