Growing up it would be fair to say that I was a skinny kid.
Some might even say rail thin.
That’s to be expected. Back in the day, video games sucked. So I was always outside. Always on the go.
Since we lived in the sticks, there wasn’t much around. Public transit didn’t even come my way.
That meant if I wanted to do anything, there was at least a 30 minute bike ride ahead of me.

I’ve received a lot of questions with the same theme lately.
So today I thought I’d dig in and answer a few for you.
First question…
Question: Jason, I don’t really know how many calories I should be eating to preserve what little mass I have left and still lose fat. 1400-1600 was the best I could figure, but I’m not really sure if that’s too much or too little.
That’s a great question on a confusing topic.
Calories are needed to build muscle.
However, a calorie deficit is needed to burn fat.
The two requirements make weight loss and muscle preservation a conflicting and confusing topic.

Join the club.
When I first got into lifting I was the same way. In my pursuit to gain weight as fast as possible I’d scour all the muscle building magazines looking for every muscle building secret known to man.
Every month as the new issues the various muscle magazines came out I’d dive in looking for the latest tips. Then I’d rush out to the gym with the workout routine of the most jacked guy I saw.
I use to think…
Wow, I am doing the same workout as Mr. O, shouldn’t be long before I have 22″ arms.
However, things didn’t go as I wished.
I would get so tired by the end of the workout I could hardly move. Than the next day I was so sore it hurt to wash my afro.
But, the more my muscles ached the bigger the smile. I thought…

Body weight workouts are popular among certain groups like the military and martial artists, but not usually with bodybuilders, fitness models or those looking to build muscle fast. That of course leaves you wondering if it is posible to build muscle without weights.
As with most strength and muscle building questions the answer is, “it depends”.
I know that answer sucks but stick with me and I will explain.
