Healthy, Tasty Bison Burgers

I don’t know about you, but I love burgers.

Until Dave passed this healthy, muscle building recipe on to me, it was something I rarely ate. Once in a while on a cheat day I would have one, but that was rare. That’s because the classic hamburger has too many carbs and fat. Not to mention all the hormones and chemicals they shoot the cows up with. Unless you only eat organic beef, you’re ingesting all that bad stuff. This makes that tasty burger an enemy to those of us looking to build muscle, burn fat, and stay healthy.

Bison (also known as buffalo) on the other hand, is a lean, nutritious, hormone-free meat, rich in flavour. This makes it an excellent option to beef and other red meats.

Antibiotics and growth hormones are not given to bison, so they are much more natural and organic. Bison roam free and for the most part feed on mostly grass and hay.

Why Eat Bison Over Other Red Meat?

There are a number of reasons why you would want to choose bison over beef or other red meat, especially those of us looking to have the best body we can.

Bison is low calorie in comparison to other red meat. It is also low fat, low in cholesterol, and non-greasy.

And because there is 25 to 30% more protein in bison than in beef, it really helps build muscle and burn fat.

Bison is extremely healthy.

Bison has less fat content than chicken or turkey. They spend their lives on grass, just as they always did. Their meat is not full of drugs, antibiotics, nitrites, or chemicals. Many people who have problems eating other red meats can often eat bison without any problems.

Bison is also low in sodium, high in protein and a good source of riboflavin, vitamin B6, phosphorus, zinc, selenium, niacin, vitamin B12 and iron.

Important differences when compared to beef include:

  • 100% Ranch Raised
  • 100% MSG Free
  • 60% to 80% less fat (depending on the cut of the meat)
  • 35% less cholesterol than beef (also less than chicken with the skin removed)
  • 30% higher in protein and less calories
  • No growth-inducing hormones, steroids, or antibiotics
  • No known human allergies

Those are just a few of the reasons you should try this great recipe.

Cooking Tip

For those of you who like your burgers well done, here’s a little tip to cook them so they remain juicy and full of flavour. The secret is to first sear both sides, then finish cooking at a low temperature. This helps lock in the moisture that often gets lost when BBQ’ing.

I love these so much that I BBQ them all year long.  Though I do have to confess… I live in Atlanta, so I don’t have snow or extremely cold days to contend with. But I would if I had to because these are some of the best burgers I’ve ever had.

Save Time

One of the biggest issues when it comes to losing weight is convenience. Consider doubling the batch and cooking them all at once. It only takes a couple of extra minutes to do.

Here's the real time saver. Freeze the cooked patties in serving sized vacuum sealed bags. Pull them out of the freezer the night two before and reheat. You've eliminated all the cooking and clean up that goes with making a meal.

To save even more time, drop the burgers in a Sous Vide Cooker. I do this before I head to the gym. Since you can't overcook your foods in the Sous Vide Cooker, you can set it and forget it. When I get back from the gym the burgers are ready.
